ISEE vs SSAT: which private school test should your child take?

E3n, which now runs both tests, says it has no preference: the ISEE and SSAT are very similar in what they assess, in difficulty and length, and in predicting first-year success. The deciding question is which test the schools you are applying to accept. After that, they differ in grades, scoring, how often a student can test, formats and fees.

Start with the schools

E3n’s first advice is to check each school’s application requirements. Many schools accept both tests, but some regions offer only one, especially at local day schools. Both tests are now run by E3n, formed when ERB (which made the ISEE) and EMA (which made the SSAT) merged.

Where the tests really differ

  • Youngest students: the ISEE starts with current first graders applying to grade 2; the earliest SSAT is for current third graders applying to grade 4.
  • Guessing: the ISEE never penalizes a wrong answer; the Middle and Upper SSAT do.
  • Testing at home: ISEE at home is offered worldwide and generally every day; SSAT at Home is for students in the United States and Canada and runs 1 to 2 weeks a month.
  • Computer testing at a school or testing office is ISEE only. Both offer paper testing and Prometric centers.
  • Paper dates: the SSAT has 6 Standard paper dates from October to March, plus Flex dates set by consultants and schools.
  • At Prometric, the SSAT can currently be taken once a year; E3n says this will change to twice a year later this fall.
  • Both offer fee waivers to qualified families, through different programs.

Common questions

Is the ISEE or SSAT easier?

E3n, which runs both, says they are very similar in difficulty and length for each grade and in what they assess. The practical differences are scoring (the Middle and Upper SSAT take off a quarter point per wrong answer; the ISEE does not) and when and where your child can test.

Do schools prefer the ISEE or the SSAT?

Each school decides. E3n says many accept both, but some regions offer only one, especially at local day schools, so check every school on your list first.

How many times can you take the ISEE and SSAT?

The ISEE once per testing season, up to three times a school year. The paper SSAT up to 6 Standard tests and 1 Flex test a testing year at the Middle and Upper Levels; SSAT at Home once a year; at Prometric once a year for now.

How much do the ISEE and SSAT cost?

In the U.S., the ISEE costs $170 online at a school for grades 5 to 12, $250 at Prometric and $130 for grades 2 to 4. The Middle and Upper SSAT cost $177 for a Standard test, $250 at Prometric and $263 at home; the Elementary SSAT costs $112.
