How UFA works

What you get	Up to $8,000 for private school students. Home-based students receive $4,000 (ages 5 to 11) or $6,000 (ages 12 to 18).
Who qualifies	Any Utah K-12 student can apply, but awards go by lottery: renewals first, then siblings, then lower-income households, then everyone else.
How full it is	27,560 students applied for 2026-27 and 19,800 were awarded, leaving about 7,500 on the waitlist.
When to apply	Renewals open March 1, new applications April 1, and the window closes May 1.
How the money moves	The program manager holds the funds and spending goes through its portal.
What it covers	Tuition, tutoring, curriculum, therapies, some technology, and extracurriculars up to 20% of the award.

Worth knowing: A district court ruled the program unconstitutional in April 2025. It keeps running while the Utah Supreme Court hears the appeal.
